Alan W. Madsen of Cornelius, N.C., is currently serving his eighth term on the Boards of Directors for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children. He was re-elected during the Shriners’ 2009 annual international convention – or Imperial Council Session – held in San Antonio July 5-9. He is serving as Imperial Assistant Rabban, part of the 13-member body that helps govern the Shriners fraternity.
Born in Manistee, Mich., Madsen served four years in the U.S. Navy, both onshore at NAS Whiting Field in Pensacola, Fla., and aboard the USS Shangri-La (CVA 38), based in Mayport, Fla. After graduating from Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., where he received a bachelor’s degree in business and a minor in psychology and journalism, he worked for Cummins Engine Company, Mobile Oil Corporation and Midrex Corporation. In 1975, he and his wife, Jan, established Corporate Personnel Consultants, Inc., in Charlotte, N.C. They owned the company until selling the firm in 1998 to the Personnel Group of America (PGA), at which time they took early retirement.
Raised a Master Mason in Excelsior Lodge #261 in Charlotte, N.C., Madsen is also a member of the York Rite and Scottish Rite bodies. He joined Oasis Shriners in 1981, was appointed to the Divan in 1992 and served as Potentate in 2000. Madsen is a member of the Oasis Patrol, the Royal Order of Jesters, and the Order of Quetzalcoatl. He also has served as Captain of the Patrol Color Guard, chairman of the Paper and Plaque Sales Project, editor of “Desert Dust,” chairman of the Publicity Committee for the Oasis Centennial, and chairman of Advertising and Promotions for the Oasis Shrine Circus. He is Past Director of the Royal Order of Jesters Court #109 in Charlotte, N.C.
A certified personnel consultant, Madsen serves on the Advisory Board for Branch Bank & Trust Corporation, and former member of the Development Board at Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, Michigan. He served for three years on the Grand Lodge of North Carolina’s Committee for Finance. He is a former member of the Advisory Boards of United Carolina Bank and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, and he has been a member of several professional and civic organizations.
Madsen and his wife Jan have two adult children, Paul and Lisa. They have one grandchild, Ryan, who lives in North Salt Lake City. Madsen has been very active in his church, serving on the church council and building committee. He is a certified open-water diver and life-member of Alpha Kappa Psi, a national business fraternity.
