Burn Care, Rehabilitation and Research
Each year, thousands of children are severely burned and require specialized treatment for their injuries. Since Shriners Hospitals for Children first made the commitment to advancing burn treatment by opening burns centers in the 1960s, over 45,000 children worldwide have received care at the Shriners Hospitals specializing in burn care.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children specializing in burn care are located in Galveston,Texas; Boston and Cincinnati. A fourth hospital in Sacramento, Calif., treats pediatric cases in orthopaedics, spinal cord injury rehabilitation and burn care.

The staffs at these hospitals ensure that patients receive complete, personalized care and employ the same interdisciplinary approach used in Shriners Hospitals for Children specializing in orthopaedic care. Our teams include anesthesiologists, pediatricians, psychologists, plastic surgeons, nurses, therapists, child life specialists and nutritionists.

Research

In order to provide the best, most up-to-date and innovative treatments, Shriners Hospitals for Children has a strong commitment to research in the burn care field. Currently, 68 research studies involving different aspects of burn injury and treatment are in process:
  • development of cultured skin
  • relationship between nutrition and recovery
  • accelerated wound healing
  • impact of exercise and recovery
  • psychological implications of burn injury

Education

Shriners Hospitals for Children have a strong reputation for partnering with leaders in medical education. The hospitals specializing in burn care have especially strong affiliations with Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical School, University of Cincinnati, University of Texas Medical Branch, Baylor College of Medicine, University of Cincinnati and University of California-Davis.
