Shriner's Hospitals

Biomedical Research Highlights
A publication of the corporate medical research department in collaboration with the corporate public relations department

A key reason for the expertise found in specialized pediatric care at Shriners Hospitals for Children is the organization's strong commitment to research. Shriners' researchers are noted as world leaders in their fields, and are respected for the impact of their work on the lives of children everywhere.

To highlight Shriners Hospitals' research efforts, we are pleased to present Biomedical Research Highlights. This edition highlights rehabilitation research pertaining to Shriners Hospitals' care disciplines of orthopaedics, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Projects in process at our Boston, Canada, Chicago, Erie, Galveston, Northern California and Philadelphia hospitals are presented, including factors that influence the quality of life of children with cerebral palsy, the effects of surgery on children with facial deformities, and determining the effects of Botox on pain during limb-lengthening procedures. Through increased understanding of treatment and rehabilitation techniques, we will ultimately be able to offer more effective treatments that will improve the lives of people around the world.
