Shriners Hospitals for Children and Kids Wish Network Honor Heroes

Shriners Hospitals for Children— Springfield has joined with the Kids Wish Network in the Hero of the Month program. Along with other hospitals throughout the country, participating members in this program by nominate one child every month from their facility. Choosing our nominees is incredibly tough as we think that all of our kids are heroes. Our hospital's nominee becomes the "Shriners Hero of the Month" and is awarded with a number special gifts provided by the Kids Wish Network. The program based on the idea that paying tribute to these children and recognizing their ability to overcome adversity can make a real and positive difference in their recovery.

Clara Gardner, July Hero

Clara Gardner, age 17, was the Shriners Hospitals for Children— Springfield/ Kids Wish Network Hero of the Month for July 2009.  Clara was nominated because of the bravery and resiliency she has exhibited throughout a very difficult year.

Clara was in an accident shortly before the start of her senior year in high school. She sustained severe injuries to both legs, resulting in bilateral amputations above her knees. Throughout her recovery, Clara remained determined and, only months after her accident, was back in school without missing a beat. She attended  her prom, sang, delivered a speech at her graduation and was accepted into a competitive college — all while learning how to walk on bilateral prosthesis and continuing intense physical therapy. Clara has kept an amazing wit and sense of humor throughout her experience.  She has had ups and downs along the way, but remains determined not to let anything interfere with her dreams.

Miguel Wells, August Hero

Miguel Wells, age 4, was the  Shriners Hospitals for Children— Springfield/ Kids Wish Network Hero of the Month for August 2009. Miguel was nominated because of his amazing spirit.

Miguel was born with a cleft lip and palate, and was placed in an orphanage in Peru. His  parents are Peace Corp volunteers who met Miguel, fell in love with him and adopted him. Miguel has undergone multiple surgeries and hospitalizations for cleft lip and palate, and for for other health issues that are associated with the condition. Miguel's ability to overcome difficult circumstances is apparent the minute you meet him. He brightens every room he walks into with his ear-to-ear smile and special twinkle in his eyes.
