Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield Completes Major Renovation Project

» Go Back

January 22, 2010

The recent renovation at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Springfield makes multiple services areas more accessible.

Hospital Renovation Incorporates Creative Use of Existing Space

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Springfield has completed a $2 million renovation to its outpatient department to accommodate the growing trend in outpatient activity. After several years of planning, the project was executed in February 2009, with the end result being additional modernized space needed to handle 20,000 clinic visits annually.

The renovation was accomplished without adding any new square footage to the facility. Through some creative use of space, including resizing ancillary and support services, the outpatient department has gained seven exam rooms. This is over a 50% increase in available clinic space which allows for improved patient and work flow. The new exam rooms are slightly larger than the original rooms that were designed and built 20 years ago. In addition, there are two nurses’ stations and two height/weight stations that add to the efficiency of the clinic. Up to five specialty clinics can be in progress at the same time.

Key clinic offices were also relocated to adjacent to the outpatient area so functions such as social work, care coordination, inpatient admission, and nutrition are more accessible and convenient for families. Additionally, the medical library was re-sized and relocated to allow improved access for the medical and clinical staff. An exciting component of the renovation was the creation of a family resource room for patients and parents. This room is filled with information about the types of conditions treated at the hospital and is being used by both outpatients and inpatients. The resource room provides a delightful atmosphere in which to explore the knowledge base that exists within the hospital and beyond.

Throughout the entire 10-month project patient volume remained steady with minimal interruption to service. The outpatient staff and other departments affected by this upgrade worked very efficiently during the renovation process.
