Spokane Community Comes to the Aid of Teen
Three local community groups are helping Shriners Hospitals for Children Spokane patients in a big way. Inland Medical and Rehab, People to People Ambassadors and Rotary International have donated funds for wheelchairs for Shriners Hospitals’ patients.
One beneficiary of this community support is 17-year-old Ruben Angul, who came to the Spokane Shriners Hospital from Nogales, Mexico. A medical team from the hospital regularly travels to Nogales to help children who do not have access to orthopaedic care. Ruben was evaluated on one such trip. He came to the Spokane Shriners Hospital in May and will be here for most of the summer.
Because of an accident when he was an infant, Ruben has used a wheelchair for most of his life. The one he currently uses needs further modifications to meet Ruben’s needs appropriately. The donated funds will help pay for a custom seating system that will support Ruben, make him much more comfortable and allow him to use the wheelchair for longer periods of time.
“Thank you so much from Ruben and his family,” his mother Argelia said. “Ruben will use this every day, we have needed this for a long time.”
Thanks to the generosity of folks in our community, the Spokane Shriners Hospital can do more to help our patients and families. We are so grateful to those who continue to support our health care system and help us improve the lives of so many kids.
