Fear and anxiety are natural reactions for anyone undergoing surgery, however children are especially vulnerable. We try to ease those worries by familiarizing young patients with medical equipment and explaining the surgical process in easy to understand terms.
Child Life Services
Child life specialists are experts in child development who promote effective coping in the hospital through play, preparation, education and self-expression activities. They provide emotional support for children and families. Your child will see a child life specialist during their inpatient stay. If your child is especially nervous or anxious about a surgery, please call our child life team at (801) 536–3664.
Pain Management
Surgery, treatments and procedures can be painful. Our goal is to keep your child as comfortable as possible. We use a number of pain management methods. Your nurse and anesthesiologist will talk to you about your child’s pain control needs. In addition, child life specialists are available to assist with pain management techniques such as relaxation therapy, music and diversional play activities. Working with you, we will decide what method of pain control will work best.
