Become a Shriners Hospital Volunteer

At Shriners Hospitals for Children–Salt Lake City, volunteers give more than their time; they give their hearts. Volunteers play a big part in making the hospital such a special place. Some volunteers make a difference by working directly with patients while others work behind the scenes providing critical support to the staff. Regardless of the different capacities in which they serve, volunteers contribute to the same mission of providing the best possible pediatric orthopaedic care.

Step One – The Application Process

Volunteer applications are available at the hospital or you can call volunteer services at (801) 536–3711 and ask that an application be mailed to you. Volunteers must:

  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Provide two references
  • Commit to one shift per week or a minimum total hours as follows:
    • Non Students - 75 hours
    • Students - 50 hours
  • Complete an interview/orientation with the hospital’s Volunteer Coordinator

Step Two – Meeting the Health Requirements

  • All hospital volunteers are screened for tuberculosis
  • Volunteers must be immunized or provide a vaccination record to show they have been immunized for mumps and pertussis
  • Volunteers must pass a drug test and background check

Step Three – Volunteer Placement

Volunteer opportunities include but are not limited to:

  • Recreational therapy - evening and weekend recreation activities for the patients
  • Inpatient nursing department
  • Outpatient clinic
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Transportation – driving patients and their families in hospital vehicles to and from the airport, hotels and medical appointments
  • Reception desk - greeting and assisting visitors at the front lobby
  • Clerical support
  • Special events
  • Sewing

Group Volunteer Opportunities

There are several ways for small and large groups to get involved with the hospital on an occasional basis. The opportunities include fundraising, providing needed items for the hospital and/or the patients, quilting and sewing. These opportunities do not require the same testing and training as for regular volunteers. Professional performing groups are welcome to provide free entertainment for patients and their families. Athletes are also welcome to volunteer their time by visiting with the patients.

For more information about becoming a volunteer contact either the Volunteer Coordinator Kathleen Euston at (801) 536-3711 or e-mail the volunteer office at jbiddiscombe@shrinenet.org
