Salt Lake City Chief of Staff to Become President of POSNAAugust 4, 2008 James W. Roach, M.D., chief of staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City, was recently named president of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA). While Dr. Roach doesn’t take command of his new post until 2010, he’ll have on-the-job training as 2nd Vice President this year and 1st Vice President next year. Dr. Roach earned his medical degree from Georgetown in 1974. Realizing early on that a big gap existed between curing patients and treating them for conditions that would never go away, he followed his passion to orthopaedics, where he felt he could make permanent and positive changes in the lives of his patients. After his residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Dr. Roach chose pediatric orthopaedics specifically for the challenge and reward of treating long-term complex conditions, and the opportunity to be more involved with patients. For the next two decades, he built a respected reputation through his work at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas and Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, before joining Shriners Hospitals in 2001. Dr. Roach’s presidency brings prestige to Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City, as well as the entire health care system. “I’m thrilled with the fact he will be president in 2010,” said Vice President of Medical Affairs Peter Armstrong, M.D. “We’re trying to raise the awareness of Shriners Hospitals in the pediatric community, and this appointment further emphasizes the caliber of physicians we have in our hospitals.” |
