Volunteer Opportunities

Shriners Hospital for Children depends on volunteers to help carry out our mission of providing the very best orthopaedic care for children available.

Volunteers are a big part of what makes this such a special place. Volunteers are needed in different areas of the hospital, so we’re sure to find a place for you that utilizes your talents and abilities, and allows you to make a difference in the lives of children.

The Application Process

  • Volunteer applications are available online; at the reception desk in the hospital lobby and the community affairs office; by calling (503) 221-3426 or by e-mail to cpaggetti@shrinenet.org
  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age and older.
  • All applicants must provide names and addresses of two references.
  • The volunteer/events coordinator reviews all applications to match skills and availability with hospital needs.
  • Applicants are called for an interview when a potential match is found. Applications are kept on file for six months.
  • All hospital volunteers must attend an orientation session.
  • The application process takes 2-4 weeks.

Health Requirements

  • All hospital volunteers are screened for tuberculosis and asked to complete a health information questionnaire.
  • Volunteers must provide a vaccination record to show that they have been immunized against measles, rubella and chicken pox.
  • All hospital volunteers must undergo a drug test and background check.

Volunteer Placements

The volunteer/events coordinator makes every effort to assign individuals to specified areas of interest. The many volunteer opportunities include:

Direct patient contact
  • Child Life: craft activities, reading, playing, and coordinating community visits such as a pet therapy dog or a movie night
  • Hospitality Desk: greet visitors and begin the registration process
  • Driver: provide transportation to and from the airport and train station as well as other errands as time permits
Little or no patient contact
  • Clerical: clerical support to various departments
  • Special Events: assist at events or staff a table at a community fair
  • Manual Labor: inventory and stock materials
  • Tour Guide: provide tours for guests
  • Sewing: sew various items for patients (quilts, welcome bags, surgical dolls)

Benefits of Volunteering

  • A sense of accomplishment in that your work contributes to the mission of the hospital and that you are helping our patients and their families
