Emergency stabilization
In conjunction with Temple University Children's Hospital, which is connected to Shriners Hospital for Children®, we offer coordinated trauma and emergency medicine, which includes emergency immobilization and early diagnostic imaging.
Immobilization in the field is critical. Because a child’s head is proportionately larger than their bodies, specialized positioning is necessary to keep the spinal column in alignment.
Early diagnostic imaging, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is especially important in the pediatric population because children are susceptible to a certain type of injury, called SCIWORA (spinal cord injury without radiographic anomaly), which can only be seen on MRI.
Once the child is stabilized, he or she is then transferred to Shriners Hospitals for Children® for continued rehabilitation.
