Shriners Hospitals for Children – Philadelphia Seasonal Flu and H1N1 Flu Visitor Restrictions

» Go Back

October 30, 2009

Shriners Hospitals for Children are committed to protecting our patients and employees from being accidentally exposed to community-acquired and hospital acquired infections.

During the months of winter and spring seasonal influenza (the “flu”) spreads throughout the United States. This year another strain is circulating in the community, H1N1 (Swine flu).  This virus places children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses at increased risk of illness and harm.

Your help in keeping both seasonal flu and H1N1 flu out of Shriners Hospitals for Children is needed.

Please review the following restrictions and share this information with your family and friends. Our intent is to protect you and your child’s health. Remember, you should only be here when well and should wash hands each time you enter or leave your child’s room.

We appreciate your understanding and ask that you follow these guidelines for your hospital visits:
  • Only parents/guardians or other principle care-givers may visit patients on the inpatient units
  • Limited visits by siblings or others for special circumstances must be arranged in advance with the inpatient unit leadership.
  • If parent/guardian have the following symptoms (or have been exposed to someone)—fever above
100° F and any of the following: sore throat, congestion, cough-- they will be required to wear a surgical mask while walking thru the facility. Activity will be restricted to the patient’s room and they will not be permitted in the cafeteria or common areas.
  • Sibling restrictions
    • Only children seeking evaluation or treatment should be brought to the hospital.
    • Patients in public waiting areas must be supervised at all times.
  • All visitors should be healthy.
    • Persons with fever (100° F or more), cough, cold, or stomach virus symptoms must not visit.
    • If there is a chance you could be coming down with something, please don’t visit.
    • No more than two visitors per patient should be in patient rooms at any one time.

If you have any questions,  please ask to speak to a nurse manager or infection control. Thank you for your cooperation.
