Shriners Hospitals for Children Cares for 11 Children Injured in Day Care FireJune 30, 2009 (Sacramento,Calif.) Shriners Hospitals for Children continues to respond to the medical needs of children severely injured in the fire at a day care center in Hermosillo, Mexico on June 5, 2009. Nine children injured in the day care fire have been admitted to the Shriners Hospital for Children— Northern California. The patients include three girls and six boys with burn injuries ranging from 17 to 80 percent of total body surface area. Five of the children are listed in critical condition and four are listed in fair condition. Two children, both 3-year-old girls, also injured in the fire are currently receiving care at the Shriners Hospitals for Children in Cincinnati. Another girl who was transferred to that hospital last week died of her injuries. The week after the fire, a medical team from Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California traveled to Hermosillo to evaluate and triage children who are hospitalized with serious injuries and to work with community health providers to assess children who are less seriously burned but will need care. As a result of the medical mission, seven other children injured in the fire have been scheduled for follow-up care at an outreach clinic in Hermosillo.
