Shriners Hospital in Galveston to Host 2010 World Burn Congress

» Go Back

July 29, 2008

Shriners Hospitals for Children – Galveston and the University of Texas Medical Branch have been selected to co-host the Phoenix Society’s World Burn Congress in 2010. The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors is the leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering anyone affected by a burn injury through peer support, education, and advocacy.

The Phoenix Society's World Burn Congress is an annual international conference that brings together more than 800 burn survivors, their families, caregivers, burn care professionals and firefighters. It is a forum that encourages and facilitates the sharing of personal stories, provides support and increases knowledge of burn recovery. For many it is the first opportunity to meet and share with others who have experienced a burn trauma.

The conference also serves as a valuable learning experience for burn care professionals to better understand the issues that impact burn survivors’ lives. Many firefighters who have attended talk about the closure it brings for them as they witness burn survivors and their families moving on with their lives. For individuals who are active in the burn support community at a local level, the World Burn Congress serves as an important networking opportunity.

“The Board of Trustees and staff at the Society are very excited to bring the Phoenix Society's World Burn Congress to Galveston,” said Amy Acton, executive director of the Phoenix Society. “Our partnership with Shriners in Galveston has continued to grow over the past few years. The experience and commitment of the burn team during our site visit made the decision to come to Texas an easy one.”
