Hospital Ends 2009 with Grand Reopening, Big Plans for 2010January 8, 2010 ![]() Shriners Hospitals for Children – Galveston ended 2009 with a grand reopening celebration, and looks forward to 2010 with several exciting events, including co-hosing the Phoenix Society World Burn Congress in October. On Dec. 13, 2009, Hospital Board of Governors Chairman Jim Denson, along with Administrator John Swartwout and Chief of Staff David Herndon, M.D., welcomed Shriners Hospitals for Children CEO Douglas Maxwell and other dignitaries at the hospital's reopening celebration and parade. Shriners from across the state, including El Mina Shriners of Galveston, Arabia Shriners of Houston, Hella Shriners of Dallas, Alzafar Shriners of San Antonio, Sharon Shriners of Tyler and many others, came out with bands, clowns, motor corps and other participants to parade along Seawall Boulevard to the hospital. Fundraisers and World Burn Congress are Part of 2010 Plans Events for 2010 include a fundraiser with the International House of Pancakes (IHOP), which celebrates National Pancake Day on Tuesday, Feb. 23. Gather friends, family and neighbors to your local participating IHOP restaurant and enjoy a free stack of pancakes in exchange for a donation to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners Hospitals for Children – Galveston staff members are helping to organize the Phoenix Society World Burn Congress, an annual international conference for burn survivors, their families and caregivers, health care professionals, firefighters, and others involved in the burn recovery process. This year’s congress, hosted by Shriners Hospital for Children – Galveston and the University of Texas Medical Branch, is October 20-23, 2010 at the Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston.
