Shriners Hospitals for Children— Erie Awarded Energy Grant

» Go Back

December 15, 2009

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Erie, has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Conservation Works Grant Program. The grant will be used to implement various energy-saving measures at the hospital.

The grants are part of the Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, intended to aid in economic recovery. Funds are awarded to facilities which show energy-savings projects resulting in a 25 percent or more reduction in energy use.

With assistance from a consultant and hospital vendors, a proposal to improve the hospital’s lighting, air handling, and boiler systems was submitted and approved for funding.

Implementation of the energy-saving measures is set to begin in January 2010. Once complete, the hospital estimates an annual savings of $64,000 in utility costs.

The energy-saving work will be done by Gerster Trane of Buffalo and Niagara Electrical Contractors of Erie, and will include retrofitting of lighting fixtures, installation of new high-efficiency boilers and boiler controls, and modifications to the hot water system.
