Shriner's Hospitals

Help Us to Accomplish our Mission
Volunteering with Shriners Hospital

Shriners - Chicago runs more effectively with the help of about 100 weekly volunteers. We are looking for applications from people with unique talents to help in all facets of hospital operations. We make a commitment to our patients and families that we will provide the best quality care environment, and we are looking for volunteers to help us in this mission.

Volunteer Needs
Our need for volunteers is greatest during normal business hours, Monday Friday between 8 a.m. 5 p.m. A limited number of opportunities are available between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and very few opportunities are sometimes available on the weekends. Because of the significant testing and training required of volunteers, we need loyal volunteers who can commit to staying with us for at least six months, working one day a week for a few hours each visit.

Shriners Hospitals Alumni Association

Are you a former patient?
The parent of a patient or former patient?
A former staff member?

Its a rare hospital that can claim its own alumni association, but Shriners Hospitals for Children, the only system of hospitals in the U.S. which provides all care at no cost to families, is a philanthropy unique in many ways.

Early in 2006, John Lehuta, director for U.S. Research for McDonalds Corporation and a patient at Shriners Chicago in the 1970s, invited former patients to join with him in creating a formal alumni association to support the mission of the hospital. A core group of former patients has been meeting monthly to organize and plan ways to pay forward to the next generation what they themselves have gained from Shriners; they recently sponsored a reunion to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the hospital.

Ideas for future Alumni Association initiatives include acting as role models for current patients; adopting and supporting individual patient programs; sharing information about services and medical care; speaking for the hospital or contacting the media with stories; working together to publish a volume of alumni stories; and perhaps fundraising for the hospital. The Chicago group hopes that chapters for a nationwide alumni association will eventually be established at each of the 22 Shriners Hospitals. The groups vision is to foster a national alumni network to help continue the mission of Shriners Hospitals for Children throughout the 21st century.
