Care Specialties
The Shriners Hospital for Children — Canada is a 40-bed pediatric orthopaedic hospital providing comprehensive orthopaedic care to children from Canada and the northeastern United States.
An interdisciplinary approach is used in patient care programs to ensure comprehensive care for each patient. The staff includes orthopaedists and pediatricians, as well as other medical specialists.
The Shriners Hospital for Children — Canada is equipped and staffed to provide care for virtually all pediatric orthopaedic problems, with the exception of acute trauma. Some of the orthopaedic problems most commonly treated at the hospital include:
- Scoliosis and other spinal deformities
- Spina bifida
- Skeletal growth abnormalities
- Orthopaedic problems of cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders
- Metabolic bone disease
- Hand disorders
- Hip disorders
- Limb deficiencies
- Leg length discrepancies
The hospital hosts two major orthopaedic research facilities, genetics and joint diseases. They have been at the origin of several major breakthroughs, not the least of which is the development of a treatment for osteogenesis imperfecta that is changing the lives of children and their families around the world.
An active partner in the Quebec Health Care system, the hospital is funded in part by the Government of Quebec that by law, is obligated to care for and treat all children needing service.
Family-Centered Care
Recognizing that the family plays a vital role in a child's ability to overcome an illness or injury, Shriners Hospitals for Children helps the family provide the support the child needs by involving the family in all aspects of the child's care and recovery.
The purpose of all Shriners Hospitals for Children is to provide care to children with orthopaedic problems, burns, spinal cord injuries and certain other medical conditions, to help them lead fuller, more productive lives.
By promoting the importance of the family and helping it become a stronger support system for the child, Shriners Hospitals for Children can accomplish its purpose more effectively.
