Rooming in Guidelines
The philosophy of care at the Shriners Hospital encourages parents to be with their child as much as possible. Every effort is made to provide parents with accommodation. Upon admission, parents are asked to sign a “Parent Accommodation Agreement”. Rooming-in arrangements are discussed with the nurse. One parent or close family member over 18 years of age is allowed to room with the child.
A bedchair is located in the child’s room. Parents should ask the nursing staff for linens. Parents are asked to make or close the bedchair by 8:00 a.m. Upon discharge, linen is to be removed from the bed. For safety reasons, bedchairs have been assigned a specific place in each room and should remain in this designated area (please see diagram behind the door of the room). Parents may not sleep on hospital beds and children are not allowed to sleep in the bedchairs.
Two washrooms with showers are available for parent use on the second floor. Towels are available on request. A cupboard and lockers are available for the storage of suitcases, coats, etc. in the parents lounge. Valuables should be left at home. The hospital will not be held liable for the loss, theft or damage to personal belongings. The cafeteria schedule, instructions for special meal arrangements and bulletins about special events (holiday meals, BBQs, etc.) are posted on the bulletin board in the parents lounge.
A refrigerator for parent use is located in the patient dining room on the second floor. All items must be clearly labeled with name and date. Parents are asked to remove left over food at the time of discharge.
