Burn Awareness Week Is An Opportunity for Community Outreach
Fire professionals share a common goal with Shriners Hospitals for Children: the prevention of burn injuries through public education. The annual Burn Awareness campaign, recognized the first full week of February of each year, offers the opportunity to bring burn injury prevention to the attention of parents, caregivers, children and educators. It also provides fire departments the opportunity to reach out to schools, organizations and groups to offer presentations on burn prevention and fire safety.
The focus of Shriners Hospitals' 2008 campaign is the prevention of burns caused by the improper storage and misuse of gasoline.
To share important gasoline burn prevention safety messages, Shriners Hospitals has produced as series of educational materials including a coloring book featuring Anthony the Fire Ant, fact sheets, posters and other items that can be ordered at no charge (while supplies last).
Lessons Learned: Austin Bailiff: This brief video emphasizes the dangers of playing with gasoline and targets a teen and "tween" audience. Austin Bailiff is a teen who was severely burned after experimenting with fire and gasoline. Bailiff has endured months of surgeries, skin grafts and therapy, and has missed out on playing football, wrestling and his 8th grade graduation. Warning: video contains images that might be disturbing to younger audiences.
