Each year, thousands of children sustain burn injuries in the home.
In many cases, these injuries were preventable. That's why Shriners
Hospitals for Children sponsors an annual campaign dedicated to burn
awareness. Burn Awareness Week is nationally recognized the first full
week in February. This year's focus is the prevention of
gasoline-related injuries.
For Elementary School Educators
To assist educators in teaching important gasoline burn prevention
messages to students, Shriners Hospitals for Children has prepared a
series of sample lesson plans. The lesson plans feature Anthony the
Fire Ant, and are appropriate for grades K-3. The lesson plans,
posters, coloring pages and fact sheets you can send home to parents
and caregivers, can be downloaded and printed from the links below.
Educators can also place online orders to request additional materials.

For Middle and High School Educators
Young people ages 13 and older are in the highest at-risk group for
gasoline and other flammable substance burns. To spread the message
about the dangers of misusing gasoline to teens and "tweens", Shriners
Hospitals has produced a brief video featuring Austin Bailiff, a teen
who was severely burned after experimenting with fire and gasoline.
Bailiff has endured months of surgeries, skin grafts and physical
therapy, and has missed out on playing football, wrestling and his 8th
grade graduation.
The video can be viewed online, downloaded or ordered in a DVD format at no charge (while supplies last). The video contains images that might be disturbing to younger viewers.
The video may be used to start a classroom discussion on the proper
use of gasoline, as well as the dangers that exist from misusing the
highly flammable substance.
