About Shriners Hospitals For Children—Boston

Shriners Hospitals for Children—Boston is a leader in pediatric burn care, research and education. All medical care at Shriners Hosptials is provided at no cost to patients and families. 

Children up to age 18 are eligible for admission to Shriners Hospitals for Children if, in the opinion of our physicians, there is a reasonable possibility they can benefit from the specialized services available. Admission is based solely on a child’s medical needs, regardless of financial need.

For patients at Shriners Hospitals, ability to pay or insurance coverage is never an issue. There is no charge for any care or services provided within Shriners Hospitals for Children facilities.

Each year, the Shriners hospital in Boston admits more than 1,000 children and treats more than 5,000 children on an outpatient basis.

Family-Centered Care

A patient's family plays a major role in the recovery process. The hospital stresses that while medicine might heal the child's body, tending to the child's sense of well-being is equally important to recovery.

Shriners Hospitals for Children practice a family-centered care approach with programs designed to assist the whole family during the acute, reconstructive and recovery phases of a child's injury.  

Care Coordination

The care coordination team consists of licensed clinicians who assist with the adjustments families may face during a child's treatment.

Social workers provide individual and family counseling during inpatient and clinic visits. They help families understand and develop coping strategies to deal with the social, emotional and psychological impact of illness or injury.

Care coordinators help families identify the child's health care needs; improve communication between their community and hospital health care providers; and assist in accessing community resources such as vocational, rehabilitation, early intervention and state and federal programs.
